Transitions are tough but can be movement based and entertaining if they are couched in a way children find interesting and challenging.

Using the stairs to “climb” Mount Everest is a great way to incorporate a lot of physical strengths while dipping into imagination.

Facts:

  • Mount Everest is almost 30,000 feet high, which is like stacking 857 two story houses on top of each other.
  • The summit sits at the borders of China, Tibet and Nepal.
  • The mountain is more than 60 million years old.
  • It grows almost 1/4″ each year.
  • The wind on the mountain can blow up to 200 mph and the temperature can drop below 80 degrees.  The summit is covered in snow all year.

Talk to your children about what it would be like to climb a mountain like Mount Everest: what clothes would they wear, what equipment they would need and how they might get to the top.  Then use the stairs as the mountain, climbing through snow, lifting the feet really high with each step, holding onto the railing (aka the rope), feeling the snow flakes on their cheeks, feeling the temperature drop as they get higher, the wind get stronger as they reach the pinnacle and so on.  At the top, maybe even plant a flag!
