How to Use the Pivot to Play® Curriculum
We typically deliver our lessons to our school clients once a week but you are not so limited. This entire program could be repeated two or three times or taken apart and used in pieces whether it is in your classroom in conjunction with traditional learning or in your movement room, gym or even outside.
Each plan starts with a cover page listing the games for the day. This is followed by an Equipment List, the Pivot to Play® Strengths and Skills System and then a one page explanation for each game.
Equipment List
Our goal is to make this as easy for you as possible, so each lesson plan starts with a list of equipment needed for that plan. This list assumes you will carry a bag of playground balls or a stack of cones with you to your Play Space, so we that initial equipment list does not include quantities. Instead, quantities are listed on each game page.
Strengths and Skills System
Following the Equipment list is our Strengths and Skills System where we tally the primary strengths and skills each game or activity targets whether it is the Perceptual Motor Skills, Sensory Skills, Strengths and Other Skills.
You can rest assured, however, that the beauty of big body play means there are more strengths and skills addressed than we list!
The Games
Under the name of the game, you will find the Goal of the game and below that you will find the Pivot to Play® Power Bar. The Pivot to Play® Power Bar indicates the strengths and skills children will hone in their play.
Below that you will find the exact Equipment you will need.
On each game page you will find the approximate amount of time each game should take in a green bubble top right.
Below that bubble, you may find another bubble in orange, green, light blue or pink which indicates a cross use to typical classroom lesson plans. In this case, it is science but it could be math, language arts or personal.
Finally, in the How To section, we include everything from steps to set up, how to transition the children in, introductory questions, game explanation and transition out.
We believe that Introductory Questions are very important for crowd control and highly suggest you use these while setting up and transitioning between games. This keeps children focused and the energy high.
Sometimes you will find a Change Up or Notes in the How To section. Change Ups include ways to change the game to make it harder, last longer, as an alternative for a future day, or ways to scaffold it down or up as needed.
Notes could be anything from the surface to use, where the game is played best or hints we have found to make the game the most successful.
