Topic 2: Language & Auditory Awareness

When children are in outdoor free and unstructured play, they have an opportunity to use all of their senses, something most kids did not all that long ago.  But as more free time is spent in sedentary activities, the ability to truly “hear” both the critical direct and indirect cues become weakened.

Signals there may be problems with auditory awareness:

  • Difficulty understanding what has been said
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Easily distracted by sounds
  • Startled by sudden noises
  • Difficulties following directions
  • Reading, spelling, writing or other language related challenges
  • Difficulty with verbal math problems
  • Difficulty in following conversations
  • Forgetfulness or challenges with organization
  • Difficulty remember directions or lists
  • Auditory discrimination problems, can’t tell the difference between sounds like “CH” and “SH” or “T” and “P”
