Topic 4: Class Flow and Transitions

No matter what we do through this training to set you up for success, there is still planning you will have to do before you are teaching. For example, while one game is being played, it is time to start thinking about what you need to do to transition to the next game, including:

  • How do you want to end the current game to put the children in the best situation to start the next game?
  • What equipment needs to be cleaned up and what equipment needs to be set up?
  • What leading questions are you going to ask to help with the transition?
  • What directions do the children need to understand the next game?

Remember to stop a game when it is at the height of fun which sounds counter-intuitive, but it will keep the energy high.

Pay attention to the mechanics of the game.  If it isn’t being played the way you intended and you want to get it back on course, stop the game and give the directions again.  Then give the children a quiz to be sure they understood the game, then start it again.  If it still isn’t working, no big deal.  Every now and then it will happen.  So always have an extra game at the ready in case you need to toss out one you planned on using.
