Topic 4: What Is Motor Planning?

 

Motor planning is the execution and planning of motor movements. We motor plan everything we do whether it is using a fork, hitting a golf ball, tying our shoes, writing a sentence or driving a car.

Motor planning depends on quite a few of the Pivot to Play™ strengths and skills like:

  • Muscular strengths
  • Perceptual Motor Skills
  • Sensory Skills
  • Other skills like balance, eye-hand coordination, bilateral movement and crossing the midline
  • And even on executive function which relies on order, reasoning and strong thinking skills, skills supported by aerobic movement and crossing the midline.

Kids who struggle with motor planning may have:

  • Challenged balance
  • Challenged posture
  • Are easily fatigued
  • Suffer from general clumsiness
  • Have challenges with speech
  • Have challenges with perception
  • Have challenges knowing where his body is in relation to people and things
  • Have challenges organizing things
  • Have learning challenges, possibly ADHD
  • Have poor self-esteem, low confidence
