Topic 2: Let’s Start By Talking About the Brain

Believe it or not, movement is related to functions of particular parts of the brain. For example, the cortex is responsible for processing information from our sensory system, which is connected to physicality, as we will see in future lessons. The executive brain, housed in the frontal lobe, is responsible for things like self-control, attention and judgement, which sounds an awful lot like behavior doesn’t it? As we will see in this lesson, aerobic movement turns on the behavior system. The cerebellum integrates movement with information so that motor errors can be corrected and we develop skill, and the hippocampus drives our emotional system, but it also is crucial to our navigation and spatial awareness, which are both highly dependent on movement to execute successfully.
