Topic 2: What to expect & What is Big Body Play?

 

  • Each level contains 8 lessons, each about 1- 1.5 hours in length
  • Each lesson will cover related topics and may include additional readings, videos, charts and references
  • Each level will include one lesson devoted to games and activities for you to put to use immediately
  • As well as one lesson devoted to tips and tricks to help you gain confidence and build success working with kids.  The tips and tricks lessons will include valuable guidance on hands on applications with kids or it may focus on starting your new business
  • Most lessons include readings and quizzes
  • The quizzes pull information from the video, supporting materials and readings
  • Passing each quiz (85%) is required in order to move to the next lesson or level
  • An assessment video will need to be submitted at the end of Levels 1 and 2 to demonstrate your skills 
  • Passing the practical through an assessment of the video is required in order to move to the next level
  • You have 180 days to complete the course.

  • Lesson 6: Jump, Push and Pull the Proprioceptive System  Into Your Tool Box
  • Lesson 7: Tips & Tricks
  • Lesson 8: Games

Level 2 lessons

  • Lesson 1: Criss Cross and Noodling the Movement: What is Crossing the Midline and Motor Planning
  • Lesson 2: I Hear Ya and I See Ya! A look at auditory and visual processing
  • Lesson 3: Where Am I and How Much of Me is There? A look at body and spatial awareness
  • Lesson 4: Up, Down, Let’s Stomp, Stomp, Clap. A look at directional and temporal awareness
  • Lesson 5: Hands and Arms Do More Than Throw a Ball. A look at upper body and grip strength as well as eye-hand coordination
  • Lesson 6: Legs, Jacks and Trees. A look at Lower body strength, balance and bilateral movement
  • Lessons 7 & 8: Tips and Tricks and More Games and Lesson Plans

Your Pivot to Play Certification™ Coach Check List

  • Complete Level 1 of the online training
  • Practice teaching each of the two lesson plans
  • Choose an underserved audience of kids and film a class in its entirety using only 1 lesson plan group
  • Submit your video, self-assessment, cover letter
  • Repeat this process at the end of Level 2
    • NOTE:  a video submission may not need to be repeated.  Keep in mind that the video is a means to help a Coach hone the craft of leading kids in big body play, but also allows for a certain level of safety protecting both the Coach and Pivot to Play™
  • With your video also include
    • Background check
    • Proof of insurance
  • Register your membership with Pivot to Play™ and maintain your membership annually 
    • Gain access to more games and activities to build your business
    • Annual membership includes $100 annual fee and proof of your sharing the importance of physical activity to a child’s success with your community. Some ideas to achieving this include:
      • A letter to the editor of your local newspaper
      • A blog for a local business
      • A training of teachers, administrators, parents or community leaders on the value of big body play
      • Donation of your time and talents by teaching the Pivot to Play™ Curriculum to a group of underserved kids as you did to pass your initial certification
      • Or be creative and come up with your own! The idea is to build conversation and promote understanding of the value of big body play. And know always, we are here to help as needed!

Master Coach Certification

  • Complete Levels 3 & 4. The prerequisite is passing Levels 1 & 2
    • Levels 3 & 4 will further expand your knowledge base and include
      • Yoga, mindfulness, unstructured play, risk, social/emotional skills
      • The underlying triggers to delays and deficits, very early childhood play
    • There is no assessment video
    • Once you have completed Levels 3 & 4, maintain your membership and gain access to an even larger library of games and activities including:
      • Holiday themes 
      • Camps
      • Cooking programs
