Topic 3: The State of Our Health Today

What do you think about when you think of play? What happens when kids are in play? There is certainly a lot of high energy in big body physical play. But there are nuances in at as well. There is a give and take, there are learning from mistakes, there is trial and error and much, much more.

What does lack of opportunities for play do for a child’s health?

Consider this:

  • Only 24% of 6-17 year olds get 60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
  • And this downward trend in physical activity begins around age 6.
  • Obese children are highly likely to be obese adults.  This high rate of obesity in our young is one of the reasons why researchers estimate that 51% of the U.S. population will be obese by 2030.
  • According to the American Psychological Association: “ This rapid increase in obesity is not the product of changing biology or genes; it is the product of an obesogenic environment that promotes inactivity and overeating.”
